Holger Rune Facts

Holger started playing tennis at the age of 6 after watching his sister play the sport.

Just about 5 years after this, in 2014, he won the Danish national championship in the under-12 tier in the mixed doubles format, in partnership with fellow future professional tennis player Clara Tauson.

In 2016, he began training at the renowned Mouratoglou Academy near Paris. The facility was founded in 1996 by Patrick Mouratoglou, a French tennis coach and sports commentator of Greek descent.

A year later, Holger triumphed at the European Under-14 Championship in the singles format. In 2019, aged 15, he became the youngest Danish male singles champion when he won the indoor tournament.

He made his debut on the ATP Tour in March 2021 as a wildcard in the Argentina Open. The very next week, at the Chile Open, he recorded his first match win on the ATP Tour. In the second round of that tournament, he upset the 2nd seed Benoît Paire in straight sets to reach the quarter-final stage of the tournament. This made him the first player born in 2003 or later to reach the quarter-final of a tournament on the ATP Tour.

In June 2021, he won his first singles title (Challenger Pulcra Lachiter Biella) on the ATP Challenger Tour. The win was marred by the homophobic slurs he had made during his semi-final match in the tournament. He was fined by the ATP for this outburst.

In January 2022, he had broken into the ‘Top 100’ of the official ATP singles rankings for the first time in his career. This had made him the second-youngest male player after Carlos Alcaraz to have been ranked in the ‘Top 100’ of the ATP singles rankings.

In April 2022, in the 2nd round of the Bavarian International Tennis Championships, he had notched his first win over a player ranked in the ‘Top 10’ when he had defeated then-world number 3 Alexander Zverev in straight sets to advance to the quarter-final stage of the tournament.

Holger went on to become the third-youngest player in the Open Era to win this tournament. Consequently, he had broken into the ‘Top 50’ of the official ATP singles rankings for the first time in his career. He had also become the first Danish player to win a title on the ATP Tour since Kenneth Carlsen’s triumph at the 2005 U.S. National Indoor Championships in Memphis, Tennessee.

In the first round of the 2022 French Open, his main draw debut in the tournament, he had upset 14th seed Denis Shapovalov in straight sets. He went on to win his 2nd and 3rd round matches in straight sets as well.

In the 4th round of the tournament, he stunned then world number 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas in 4 sets to reach the quarter-final stage of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career. This had made him the first Danish male player, in the singles format, to reach the quarter-final stage of any Grand Slam tournament in the Open Era.

In November 2022, Holger Rune won his first Paris Masters title by defeating Novak Djokovic (who was a 21-time Grand Slam champion) by 3-6, 6-3, and 7-5.
